ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPPORTUNITY
A Joint Inter-American Institute (IAI) - NCAR Advanced Study Program (ASP) Colloquium
"Seasonality and Water Resources in the Western Hemisphere"
6 – 17 October 2008, IANGLIA, CRICYT, Mendoza, Argentina
Overall Objective:
Provide opportunities to identify, illustrate and communicate issues of seasonality and to develop
outputs that educate participants, stakeholders and a wider public. Over a 10 day period, the
colloquium will discuss climate seasonalities from sectoral view points (farming, tourism, science),
consider competition for water and its seasonal timing: urban, farming and irrigation, flood control
measures, fisheries, energy. Changes in seasonality are expected to be a major issue under climate
change, and impacts are already felt in many regions, yet the documentation on climate change has
largely centred on annual averages and ignored other qualitative climate characteristics of climate.
Through lectures, panel discussions and hands-on exercises, we will explore case studies from
different regions, and the policy process under different modes of governance and legislation in
local, national and international contexts. There will be a diffuse boundary between presenters and
students hoping for a mutually beneficial learning experience. We will also work towards a more
permanent engagement of participants in future networking and funding opportunities.
Application Process:
The Colloquium is designed to engage graduate students, practitioners and early career
professionals interested in the science, policy and decision making of climate change and variability
from the Americas. Applicants should be enrolled in or graduates from an advanced degree program
in the physical, social, or political sciences; or hold an early career position working in one or more
of these areas. To be eligible, applicants must be based at an institution in the Americas, preferably
